MY LOOK FOR THE 2016 AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS

Fashion and Award shows have fused together in a way that is both contrived and organic, the interplay between both has heightened the enjoyment of both to the audience and participants alike. Whether the attendees like it or not, the pressure to show up with their best foot forward is palpable. Not only was I feeling the excitement of attending the American Music Awards this year, but I was also experiencing the anxiety of choosing the right outfit for the award show. My pressure was additionally compounded by having my plus one for the event, my friend Max who as an international model wears the very best clothes from around the world! Thankfully, he was not only flawless in his style but he was comfortable with these theatrical surroundings. Unfortunately, due to the torrential rain and the ensuing gridlock traffic, we were rushing to our seats and did not get a chance to walk the red carpet, so no great photos to share, however we rocked outfits that were fun and matched the vibrancy of the people and theatre that surrounded us.

I have many designers that I love who are a constant in my wardrobe and I also like to add new designers that show up on my radar. One of my favorite fashion brands is Baja East, whom I’ve mentioned in my carryon post, and as I mentioned they have emerged each season with an edgier, provocative yet still comfortable perspective. The clothes I have from years past are not the clothes they are producing now; they are pushing boundaries further. For this show I knew I wanted something that would stand out, and I found that look through Baja East.

To say I was obsessed with the pants I wore is an understatement! They created a Satin Crepe Trouser in Opium, a charcoal grey color with a drop crotch. They even have clasp closures in the pockets so nothing falls out. I would recommend wearing tight fitting boxers or briefs unless you plan on putting on an unintended show! I paired the pants with a Baja East Satin Black Crepe Jacket, which is a super lightweight blazer with a satin shawl collar and I am a sucker for a shawl collar! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve worn this or how versatile this blazer is, it looks just as great on the red carpet as it does with jeans and driving shoes. I wore my favorite brand of t-shirts, Nana Judy’s plain black t-shirt. I finished the look off with my gold key necklace of a Smith & Wesson key produced by Kiki De Montparnasse for their 24kt gold handcuffs (don’t ask) and finished off the outfit with Saint Laurent Devon 30 Zippered Boots in black velour. I also laughed as the satin and suede ensemble was besieged by the torrential rain, trying to ‘re-style’ my look into that of a flood victim, however, the umbrella, kindly issued from the JW Marriott at LA Live, got me through the night unscathed! I loved the look and l wish that I had better photos of it, but these will have to suffice.
